Citations and Mentions

Mention Rate

Mention rate is the percentage of AI answers in a measured prompt set that name the brand at all, with or without a citation, and it is the broadest single measure of whether the brand exists in AI-generated answers about its category.

Also known as:AI mention rate, brand mention rate

Mention rate is calculated by running a fixed set of representative prompts across AI engines and counting how many of the resulting answers name the brand, divided by the total prompts. Citations are included in this count because they also name the brand, but unlinked mentions count as well.

Compared with citation rate, mention rate is broader and changes faster. A brand that becomes more widely written about across the web, or that publishes more content matching the prompt set, will usually see its mention rate move first. Citation rate tends to follow once the engines start treating the brand as a primary source rather than just a familiar name.

The two metrics together describe different stages of AI visibility. A high mention rate with a low citation rate means the brand is known but not yet cited as a source. A high citation rate with a low mention rate means the brand is used as a source but not yet treated as a top recommendation. The closer the two move together, the stronger the underlying AI visibility position.

Key points

  • Percentage of AI answers in a fixed prompt set that name the brand.
  • Includes both linked citations and unlinked mentions.
  • Tends to move faster than citation rate and acts as a leading indicator.
  • Most useful when read alongside citation rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI mention rate?

Mention rate is the percentage of AI answers in a measured prompt set that name the brand at all, whether or not a source link is attached.

How is mention rate different from citation rate?

Mention rate counts every time the brand is named. Citation rate only counts answers that link to the brand as a source. A high mention rate with a low citation rate usually means the brand is known but not yet trusted as a primary source.

Mention (vs Citation)
A mention is when an AI answer names a brand without linking to it, while a citation is when the answer explicitly attributes information to a source via a link or footnote, which means mentions build awareness but citations build traffic and stronger authority signals.
Citation Rate
Citation rate is the percentage of AI answers in a measured prompt set that include a citation linking back to a brands content, and it is the cleanest single metric for tracking whether AI engines treat the brand as an authoritative source.
Brand Visibility (AI)
Brand visibility in AI refers to how often and how prominently a brand appears in answers produced by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, measured across the queries that matter to the brand.
Share of Voice (AI)
Share of voice in AI is the percentage of relevant AI answers in which a brand is named or cited, measured against a fixed set of prompts and against a defined competitive set, so that brand performance can be compared head to head over time.
