Citations and Mentions

Mention (vs Citation)

A mention is when an AI answer names a brand without linking to it, while a citation is when the answer explicitly attributes information to a source via a link or footnote, which means mentions build awareness but citations build traffic and stronger authority signals.

Also known as:AI mention, brand mention, unlinked mention

AI engines surface brands in two distinct ways. A mention is unlinked: the brand appears in the synthesized text by name (sometimes as a recommendation, sometimes as a passing reference) but no source link is attached. A citation is linked: the engine points to a specific source URL, and the user can click through. Most AI answers contain both forms at once: some sentences cite sources, others just name brands.

Mentions matter because they put the brand in front of the user inside the answer. They are also a leading indicator of model-level brand knowledge: the engine has heard of the brand and considers it relevant enough to include. Citations matter because they confer authority and drive measurable click traffic back to the site.

Practical visibility work should track both. A brand that is heavily mentioned but rarely cited is well known to the model but is not yet being treated as a primary source: there is upside in writing more answer-shaped content that the engine can cite. A brand that is heavily cited but rarely mentioned in recommendations may be seen as a useful source on the topic but not yet as a brand to recommend, which is a different problem to solve.

Key points

  • A mention names a brand without linking; a citation links to a specific source.
  • Most AI answers contain both kinds of reference at once.
  • Mentions build awareness; citations build authority and drive traffic.
  • Tracking both reveals different gaps in a brands AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is when an AI answer names a brand without a source link. A citation is when the answer explicitly attributes information to a source via a link or footnote.

Is a mention as valuable as a citation?

They are valuable in different ways. A mention puts the brand in front of the user inside the answer. A citation also drives traffic and signals that the brand is trusted as a source. Both should be tracked.

Citation (in AI answers)
A citation in an AI answer is an explicit reference to a source, usually a clickable link, that the engine attributes the information to, and it is the strongest form of visibility because it both names the source and sends traffic back to it.
Mention Rate
Mention rate is the percentage of AI answers in a measured prompt set that name the brand at all, with or without a citation, and it is the broadest single measure of whether the brand exists in AI-generated answers about its category.
Citation Rate
Citation rate is the percentage of AI answers in a measured prompt set that include a citation linking back to a brands content, and it is the cleanest single metric for tracking whether AI engines treat the brand as an authoritative source.
Brand Visibility (AI)
Brand visibility in AI refers to how often and how prominently a brand appears in answers produced by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, measured across the queries that matter to the brand.
Share of Voice (AI)
Share of voice in AI is the percentage of relevant AI answers in which a brand is named or cited, measured against a fixed set of prompts and against a defined competitive set, so that brand performance can be compared head to head over time.
